
So you’ve gone to get your annual check up. The smear, the boobs, blood work, the lot. You get a call back from the doctors to inform you that your cholesterol reading is high…. So now what?
As you know, about a year ago I also got a high cholesterol reading on my blood work. I was baffled. I work out, I eat well and while I am stressed (who isn’t?) I have my yoga to relax me (and my R&R) and the dog walks too. How could I have high cholesterol? If I’m being honest I felt a bit like a failure, like I’d done something wrong even though I KNOW that as we age, our cholesterol levels increase as well. All part of the aging process! 🥴
I knew diet was key and that one of the more effective cholesterol lowering foods is oats. Oats are high in beta glucans that bind to bad cholesterol in the gut preventing it from entering the bloodstream. You need to consume 40-60g oats a day to have a positive lowering effect. Beware things like oat milks though- they have really low levels of actual oats in them and many oat milks contain stabilizers and other additives.
Oats are not the only fibre which has a positive effect. Adding fibre of other kinds, such as avocado, legumes and leafy vegetables can help lower cholesterol too. The key ingredient in all of these soluble fibre-rich foods is plant sterols. Significant clinical evidence supports the role of plant sterols (1.5-3 g a day) to support healthier cholesterol levels.
However, it’s not always easy to get your plant sterols and your fibre count up. Lack of diet variety, personal taste preference (not everyone loves a bowl of kale) and just the usual shenanigans of our busy, modern lives all add up to lower fibre counts.
