How to Check Your Breasts: A Simple Guide

How to Check Your Breasts: A Simple Guide

Checking your breasts regularly helps you get to know what's normal for you — so if anything changes, you’ll be more likely to notice.

 When to Check?

  • Once a month

  • A few days after your period ends — when your breasts are less likely to be swollen or tender

  • If you no longer get periods, pick the same date each month (e.g. the 1st)

What to Look and Feel For?

You’re checking for anything new or unusual:

  • Lumps or thickened areas you haven’t felt before

  • Changes in size or shape

  • Dimpling or puckering of the skin

  • Nipple changes – pulled in, a rash, or unusual discharge

  • Redness or swelling

  • Pain in one area that doesn't go away

 How to Check?

You can check in the mirror, in the shower, or lying down – do what feels easiest for you.

1. Look

  • Stand in front of a mirror with shoulders straight and arms down.

  • Look for changes in shape, size, or skin.

  • Raise your arms and look again.

  • Check for any fluid coming from the nipples (clear, milky, yellow, or bloody).

2. Feel

Use the flat part of your fingers in small circular motions:

  • In the shower – run soapy hands over your breasts and underarms.

  • Lying down – place one arm behind your head and use the opposite hand to check the breast and armpit area.

  • Move in a pattern: circles, lines (up and down), or from the nipple outward — whatever helps you cover the whole area.

Don't forget:

  • Under the armpit

  • Up to the collarbone

  • Under the breast

What if You Notice a Change?

  • Don’t panic — most changes aren’t cancer.

  • See your GP as soon as possible — it’s always worth checking.

Reminder: You’re not looking for problems — you’re getting to know your normal.
