Checking your breasts regularly helps you get to know what's normal for you — so if anything changes, you’ll be more likely to notice.
🕒 When to Check
-
Once a month
-
A few days after your period ends — when your breasts are less likely to be swollen or tender
-
If you no longer get periods, pick the same date each month (e.g. the 1st)
🧠 What to Look and Feel For
You’re checking for anything new or unusual:
-
Lumps or thickened areas you haven’t felt before
-
Changes in size or shape
-
Dimpling or puckering of the skin
-
Nipple changes – pulled in, a rash, or unusual discharge
-
Redness or swelling
-
Pain in one area that doesn't go away
👋 How to Check
You can check in the mirror, in the shower, or lying down – do what feels easiest for you.
1. Look
-
Stand in front of a mirror with shoulders straight and arms down.
-
Look for changes in shape, size, or skin.
-
Raise your arms and look again.
-
Check for any fluid coming from the nipples (clear, milky, yellow, or bloody).
2. Feel
Use the flat part of your fingers in small circular motions:
-
In the shower – run soapy hands over your breasts and underarms.
-
Lying down – place one arm behind your head and use the opposite hand to check the breast and armpit area.
-
Move in a pattern: circles, lines (up and down), or from the nipple outward — whatever helps you cover the whole area.
Don't forget:
-
Under the armpit
-
Up to the collarbone
-
Under the breast
🩻 What if You Notice a Change?
-
Don’t panic — most changes aren’t cancer.
-
See your GP as soon as possible — it’s always worth checking.
✅ Reminder
You’re not looking for problems — you’re getting to know your normal.
