With SO MUCH information online, it’s hard to know what to eat, when to eat or how to eat. Let’s keep it simple- that way you’ll keep going back for more (of the truly nutritious stuff!) We need to think of food as good fuel for our bodies and brains to look after us as we move through life!
Macros- What Are MacroNutrients & Why They Matter
-
Carbohydrates - not all carbohydrates are equal- if you are eating only white, refined carbohydrates (biscuits, mass produced bread, crackers) you are not fuelling your body properly. Instead fill up on complex carbs such as wholewheat bread and pasta, sourdough, quinoa, oats. Starchy vegetables such as potatoes (skin on!), legumes (beans & peas), lentils and chickpeas. Apples and bananas are also good options.
-
Fats - butter & cheese, olive oil and nuts; fish such as sardines or salmon; eggs and flaxseed
-
Protein - lean protein such as turkey, tofu and chicken breast; beef & lamb as well as eggs and dairy- yoghurt & cheese
Keep Food As Unprocessed As Possible
While the odd cake and biscuit won’t ruin a good nutrition programme, keep food as simple as possible. If you can’t find the ingredients on a package in nature, that's a good guideline to keep those foods to a minimum.
Water & Fibre- Why They Matter
Water is key to all of our bodily processes. Fibre matters too to keep us feeling fuller longer, to feed our gut microbiome, to maintain blood sugar balance and to help our bodies to expel waste (that’s poop to you). Kiwis with their skins work wonders!
